Student Council Leaders Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership, vision and direction to the Palm Student Council.
- Preside over all meetings of the Council.
- Work with the Secretary to create and circulate meeting agenda for upcoming meetings.
- Represent the Student Council in any court in which proceedings against or on behalf of the Student Council are heard.
- Ensure the Student Council is always represented at orientations, matriculations, graduations and all other University College activities.
- Serve as an ambassador for quality higher education at Palm University College.
- Ensure all Student Council leaders fulfil their duties impartially, accurately and promptly.
- Assist the President in the performance of his duties.
- Work closely with the President and the Career Services Officer at the University College towards building a strong Alumni body.
- Coordinate and oversee all other leaders’ progress with updates to the President.
- Encourage members of the Council to advance the course of Palm University College.
- Take charge of all financial transactions in accordance with the provisions of this constitution.
- Liaise with the Election committee of the University College to conduct free and fair Student Council elections.
- Serve as an ambassador for quality higher education at Palm University College.
- Perform other functions as may be directed by the President.
- Keep, manage and share accurate minutes of all proceedings of the Student Council leadership meetings.
- Responsible for all correspondence of the Student Council, and the General Assembly.
- Communicate to the Student Council, at least once every month when school is in session, on the current state of student affairs.
- Develop and maintain student relations.
- Organize meetings of the leadership and that of the Student Council.
- Track attendance at Student Council meetings.
- Secure publicity and sponsorship for Student Council functions.
- Serve as an ambassador for quality higher education at Palm University College.
- Perform other functions as may be directed by the President.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all communications within the Student Council.
- Ensure smooth flow of information between council members, students, and faculty.
- Acts as a liaison between the student council and other student groups, clubs, and organizations.
- Draft and distribute announcements, newsletters, emails, and other communications to keep the student body informed.
- Create content for social media platforms, the student council pages, and other public communication platforms.
- Create communication strategies and campaigns to promote student council events and initiatives.
- Liaise with the event planning committees to ensure that all events are effectively publicized.
- Maintain an up-to-date online presence to reflect ongoing activities, events, and council achievements.
- Prepare reports on the effectiveness of communication strategies and suggest improvements.
- Receive all monies and revenue accruing to the Student Council and the disbursement of such money as the Executive Committee shall direct, subject to the approval of the Students Parliament.
- Maintain an updated financial record of the Palm Student Council.
- Work with other executives to develop a fundraising strategy and plan for the Council in aid of the University College.
- Report regularly on the status of all finances of the Student Council.
- Develop a budget for the upcoming fiscal year including requests for future funding requirements and submit same for the approval of the student parliament.
- Carry out, under the supervision of the President, all financial transactions of the Student Council in accordance with the provisions of the constitution, and the approval of the Students Parliament.
- Be one of the signatories to the accounts of the Student Council.
- Promote awareness on gender equality, women’s rights, and social justice within the student community.
- Organize campaigns, workshops, and discussions on issues such as gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and mental health. Also, plan and organize events centered on women’s empowerment, such as Women’s History Month activities, self-defense classes, and leadership seminars.
- Collaborate with relevant organizations and individuals to bring in speakers and facilitators for educational sessions.
- Serve as a representative and voice for female students on the student council, ensuring their concerns and needs are addressed.
- Create a safe space where female students can discuss issues affecting them and provide guidance or refer them to support services when needed.
- Develop initiatives to support female students in areas such as leadership, career development, and personal growth.
- Advocate for policies and practices within the student council and school that promote gender equity.
- The Student Parliament will have oversight for all Student Council activities.
- The Parliament would be led by a Speaker to be elected at the first sitting when all representatives have met.
- The Student Parliament would consist of program and general course representatives from each level.
- The Parliament will be the approving authority for all Student Council programs, budgets and spending.
- The Student Parliament would hold sittings twice every semester; at the beginning and closure of each semester.
- Two-thirds of the Student Parliament would form a quorum for any sitting.
- Members are responsible for voicing the concerns, needs, and suggestions of their constituents (students in their class or level) in Parliament.
- Members are expected to attend all Student Parliament meetings and participate actively in discussions and debates.
- Members may be nominated or appointed to serve on various committees within the Student Parliament.
- Members must maintain regular communication with their constituencies (students in their class or level) where necessary.
- Members are to monitor any ongoing issues affecting students, such as academic policies, welfare concerns, or campus safety, and report them to the Parliament.
- Members are required to be actively involved in campaigns, projects, and initiatives that promote student welfare and improve campus life.
- Members may be called upon to mediate or resolve disputes within their constituencies or among other student groups.
- Members are expected to adhere to high ethical standards in their roles, showing integrity, honesty, and respect for their peers.
