The DOO Foundation Story
The David Okai Okantey Foundation was founded by Dr. Peter Carlos Okantey in honour of David Okai Okantey and his family; his wife Evelyn Naa Amerley Palm of blessed memory and his children; Joseph Oliver Okaitey Okantey, Albert Okaitei Okantey, Cynthia Okailey Okantey, Rebecca Okaikor Okantey, Miriam Okaikai Okantey and Peter Carlos Okaikwei Okantey.
The Foundation was founded to honour David Nii Okai Okantey of Madina and the Okaileytse We; for the life he has led as a Christian, lay-preacher, father, grandfather and working professional.
Mr. David Okai Okantey was born on the 11th of May, 1933, at Osu, Okaileytse We. His parents were Mr. Emmanuel Ago Kojo Okantey aka Ataa Ago, a goldsmith from Osu Ashante Blohum, Ajumako, and Beatrice Yaboley Abla Abbey Atiwe of Osu and Seseme near Abokobi; both of blessed memory. He has five siblings; two brothers and three sisters.
He started his education at the Osu Progress School and continued to Accra High School. He was trained as an auto-mechanic at the Old Government Transport Department, now State Transport Corporation (STC), under a bond of five years. He was appointed Supervisor in training after the five-year training bond. After working as a Supervisor General for some time, he was seconded to the Ministry of Economic Planning as a Transport Officer for about three years during the Sector Studies project.
He later joined the Ministry of Finance after it was merged with the Ministry of Economic Planning. He worked under the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for about 15 years and was later transferred back to State Transport Corporation (STC). He worked at STC for a total of 20years and retired as a Supervisor General at age 55.
He got married at the age of 24 to Evelyn Naa Amerley Palm of blessed memory from Nyoŋmowokweo of Osu. They lived at Osu and its environs before moving to Madina. They were blessed with six children; Joseph Oliver Okaitey Okantey, Albert Okaitei Okantey, Cynthia Okailey Okantey, Rebecca Okaikor Okantey, Miriam Okaikai Okantey and Peter Carlos Okaikwei Okantey; 11 grandchildren namely; Ebenezer Nii Okai Okantey, Priscilla Naa Aklerh Okantey, Josephine Naa Aklerh Okantey, Mercy Naa Korkor Adjaney Okantey, Angela Naa Yaboley Okantey, Kai Mansa Okantey, David Nii Okai Okantey, Grace Baiden-Awatey, Naa Amerley Niva Aklerh Okantey, Nii Okai Sampson Palmer Okantey, Naa Korkor Adjaney Merida Evelyn Okantey and 4 great-grandchildren namely; Yidziemo Lalah Naa Deedei Chonia, Arielle Okailey Okantey, Jaden Nene Tettey Awatey and Shadey Naa Korkoi Chonia.
He is a staunch Christian, just like his parents were. He was baptized at an early stage in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Ebenezer congregation, Osu. He fellowshipped with them for 25 years and later converted to the Christianborg Baptist Church, Osu as a result of receiving supernatural healing through Rev. Floyd Kester of blessed memory. He worshipped and served as an elder, deacon, and a lay preacher, constantly preaching for more than 15 years which took him to Liberia and Kenya.
His life’s principles are discipline, honesty, integrity, and faith. He feels almost accomplished in his life because most of his prayers have been answered. His definition of a successful life is when you have walked with God and depended on Him consistently. He is satisfied with the life he has lived and would not change anything if he had a second chance at life.
His advice to any young person who is starting out in life is to “put their faith in God, do according to the teachings of the Bible and trust in God.
In his opinion, a good leader is someone who depends on GOD for guidance to lead his followers and listens to the followers and is always ready to serve. His greatest achievement is the success of bringing up his children in the fear of God.
In his youthful days his hobbies included studying the word of God, playing football and table tennis, and preaching.
His advice to any young person struggling in life and on the verge of giving up is to, first of all, have faith in God and have the fear of God and also keep themselves from bad company.
