Writing Center
The Palm Writing Center works with all students to effectively communicate their thoughts through writing. Our students receive help with any form of writing; from academic writing to general writing assignments. We work with students through the process of writing, from the creation of ideas through various stages of revisions, with the aim of strengthening their general writing skills and abilities. This approach to teaching our students how to write compels our students to think creatively and write critically.
Mandatory Courses
1. Expository Writing
Overview: The course is designed to help students learn to read deeply, think critically and write effectively about complex texts. Expository Writing is a required writing course for all students at Palm and must be in the first semester. The course is designed to prepare students for the writing they will do at the university and in their professional lives. Both at school and at work, writing usually involves three fundamental activities:
- reading articles, reports, or books intended for an educated audience
- making connections among multiple sources
- using this knowledge to develop an independent thesis that responds to the ideas of others.
2. Research Essay and Rhetoric
Overview: The general purpose of this course is to enable students to communicate more clearly, concisely, and coherently in writing in general, but particularly in academic writing. The course focuses on the development of critical thinking, critical reading, and critical writing skills, identification and use of rhetorical strategies, the stages and component parts of academic research papers, and general self-editing skills.
3. Introduction to Creative Writing
Overview: The purpose of this course to teach students to produce original creative works. The course focuses on the study and application of writing techniques and craft elements observed in both traditional and contemporary forms of writing, ranging from short fiction forms such as the short story and the vignette, to hybrid forms such as prose poetry and flash fiction. Teaching and learning would include mini-lectures, analysis of literary texts, in-class writing exercises, writing workshop-style critique and multiple drafts.
