Palm Peer Mentoring Program (PPMP)

The Palm Peer Mentoring Program at Palm University College is a cornerstone initiative to facilitate a seamless transition for all freshmen into university life. Through a collaborative approach involving mentors and mentees, this program offers invaluable insights into campus life while highlighting the existing support systems available at Palm University College, including faculty advising, counseling, coaching, and mentoring.

The objectives of the program are as follows:

  • Help students in their transition to the college environment
  • Assist students in feeling more connected to the campus and their educational goals.
  • Improve retention rates
  • Amplify skill development
  • Diminish isolation & exclusivity
  • Make students aware of the resources available to them on campus and in the community and encourage them to make use of them

By joining the Palm Peer Mentoring Program as a mentor, you contribute to enhancing your mentee’s student experience and unlock many personal and professional development opportunities. Other benefits include:

  • Develop your leadership, organizational, and self-management skills
  • Make a difference in improving the Palm student experience.
  • Receive a certificate of participation from the University.
  • Public acknowledgment of Palm University College as a peer mentor.
  • Receive hours for community service/volunteerism.
  • Receive an official reference from Palm University College when a student executes this activity excellently.

As a mentee, being matched with a mentor who has been through the freshman year before and is taking a similar program will provide many benefits including;

  • Receiving guided academic advice.
  • Ensuring a smooth transition into the University life
  • Enhancement of soft and hard skills.
  • networking opportunity.

1. Peer Mentor

  • Be a sophomore, junior, or senior at Palm University College.
  • Have a CGPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Must be a student who has not violated the Honour System
  • Willingness to commit to the program for a semester.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

2. Mentee

  • Have received admission to become a Palmer.
  • Willingness to commit to the program for an academic year.
  • Submitted your profile.

Mentors are expected to:

  • Make time to engage in mentoring activities and maintain regular contact with mentees.
  • Listen to mentees
  • Help students and offer forms of advice.
  • Direct them to existing support systems to solve their challenges.
  • Encourage students when they are facing challenges.
  • Hold group mentoring sessions at least six (6) times in the semester.
  • Submit timely and accurate reports and pictures of sessions.
  • Keep conversations confidential. Mentors are not expected to discuss mentee’s information with other professionals, staff, or peers. Palm expects its mentors and mentees to trust one another and be able to share struggles without judgment. 

Mentees are expected to:

  • Commit to the program
  • Attend group mentoring meetings
  • Reach out to their mentors in case of any questions, challenges, or general issues.
  • Acknowledge and respect professional boundaries with a mentor.
  • Keep open to the mentor’s ideas, suggestions, and relevant experiences.
  • Prepare in advance for mentoring meetings.
  • Keep conversations confidential. Mentees are not expected to discuss their mentor’s information with other professionals, staff, or peers. Palm expects its mentors and mentees to trust one another and be able to share struggles without judgment.

This formal mentoring relationship shall last for one semester. However, the mentor and mentee can decide to stay in touch after the period elapses.

  • September cohort: Applications are opened from May and June
  • January cohort: Applications are opened from October to December

  • September cohort: Applications are opened from April to September
  • January cohort: Applications are opened from October to December

 

The information obtained from the profiles of the mentees the applications of the mentors and other considerations such as program, personality, career goals, etc. will be used for the allocation. The Department will facilitate the process and pair mentees with mentors.
